Fun “Urban Fleck” Candle Holders
Wednesday, September 27th, 2006
For someone who likes candles as much as I do, it’s a little depressing how few decent candle holders I have. I have wax dribbles down the fireplace mantel because I’m always putting the wrong sized candles into my little tealight holders. Or worse, I just burn the pillar candles without a holder at all. I need to invest in some decent-looking pillar-sized candle holders such as these “urban fleck” ones from Pier 1. At $4-$5 they’d hardly break the bank. It’s just a matter of getting my lazy butt down to a Pier 1. Or maybe I should order online. Hm, now there’s a thought…
For some reason, looking at this candle is making me hungry. I can’t quite put a finger on it… Actually, it makes me want to take a trip down to the
Since wax is pretty malleable stuff and you can shape it into just about anything, candles tend to be shaped into… just about anything. This is the first candle I’ve seen honoring the gecko. Not just a gecko but a leopard gecko (who knew there was such a thing?): “This Leopard Gecko clings to the surface of a rock with his suction-cup padded toes.”
It must be just about time for my annual Ikea trip where I buy more lighting and lighting accessories that I just don’t need. I found this little tealight candle holder on their web site and was immediately drawn to it because of the holey sides. I love holders with circles, stars, moons, etc. punched out of the side because they project all sorts of cool bright spots onto the walls when you turn the lights out. My sun and moon lantern (which I got from Ikea many moons ago) is still one of my favorite tealight holders. Anyway, this little bugger (it’s called the Oregano for reasons I can only guess at) will only cost you 99 cents, so you can go to town and get as many as you want.
Lots of people take pictures of their pets, so they can remember the fun times they had once their cat, dog, ferret, lizard, fish, etc. etc. etc. has moved on to pet heaven. If you want something a little nicer to set on display than a photograph, you can get a custom candle with your pet’s picture on the side. Pet Wicks specializes in pet candles, and you can get your pet’s picture, name, dates, and other text included in the design. You just send them a picture and the information, and they do the rest. If you want to burn the candle, it’s designed to melt down in the center, leaving the image intact on the outside.
This pewter Doberman candle snuffer is one of several breeds available over at Cloud K9. I’ve never actually owned a candle snuffer (I just blow my flames out… and then smoke stinks up the air for a while), but it would be a fun gift for someone who burns candles or oil lamps frequently. And these, of course, are specially designed for dog lovers. Some of the other breeds available from the site are great danes, jack russell terriers, border collies, golden retrievers, and german shepherds. On the handle of the snuffer is a little dog bone to complete the theme. The price is $20 for the snuffers.
The other day I pointed out
If you’re decorating a beach cottage or just like the sight of seashells, this wall sconce could be fun. The “Ariel” candle holder is backed with a frame of shells that draw the eye. The sconce measures 11″ wide and 14″ high. At $194, it is a little more money than you might have wanted to spend decorating the beach home, but I’ve certainly seen more expensive lighting. It’s available at Kirkland, WA based Liberty 123.
In ye olden days wall brackets for holding candles were commonplace. Today… not so much. It’s just a bit easier to flip on a switch to light up your home. Still, those of us with nostalgic bents enjoy candles, and sometimes it’s nice to place them in out of the way spots on the walls. This wall bracket is made by the Blue Green Trading Company, a place that specializes in wire work furniture. This piece is designed to hold two tall tapers as well as a decorative plant in the middle (they don’t say as much, but I’m guessing it’s a good idea to get a non-flammable plastic plant…). You can buy the wall bracket online for $205.
Ah, just what everybody needs: a frog-shaped lantern for your candles. Well, if you like a bit of amphibian whimsy, this candle holder is designed for outdoor use, so you could perch it on a rock in your garden. At three pounds, it’s not going to be blown over by the wind very easily, and the sturdy rustic iron exterior will protect your candles when they’re lit. The frog has a little hinged access door in the side, so you can slip a votive in there without trouble. When it’s burning, the light escapes through the little whorls on the frog’s back and sides. I imagine it’d be kind of cool at night.
